Sports Vision Training

Improve Your Visual Performance

At the Vision Development Centre, we specialize in sports vision assessments and training. Our goal is to help athletes reach their full potential by improving their visual skills. Whether you are a beginner or a professional athlete, we offer a comprehensive range of services to help you achieve your goals.

Our sports vision training program is designed to enhance visual performance and improve overall sports-related skills. Essential visual skills for sports performance include eye-hand coordination, visual-motor reaction time, peripheral awareness, depth perception, dynamic visual acuity and focusing, tracking, and visualization skills. Our experienced team will work with you to develop and refine your visual skills, helping you to reach your highest potential.

Sports vision training is tailored to each athlete and their specific sport. Different sports require strong visual skills in varying areas. Vision training for hockey concentrates on dynamic visual acuity, peripheral awareness, visual reaction time, and eye-hand coordination, whereas a program for golf will emphasize depth perception, ocular alignment, and visualization skills to accurately judge and plan the course.

Visual Skills Assessments can often predict an athlete’s performance by outlining areas of strength and weakness. If you are having difficulties achieving the next level in your particular sport, even after increasing your practice and training regimen, a visual finding may be hindering your performance.

Our Technology and Sports Training Protocols

At the Vision Development Centre, our sports vision programs are built on the understanding that elite performance depends on far more than 20/20 eyesight. Athletes rely on advanced visual-motor and perceptual skills such as tracking, depth judgment, anticipation, processing speed, and decision-making under pressure. Our technology and training protocols are designed to identify and develop these skills in a structured, measurable way that translates to real-world performance.

Comprehensive Sports Vision Assessment

Every athlete begins with a one-hour Sports Vision Assessment. This assessment is essential for understanding how the visual system functions under sport-specific demands and serves as the foundation for any training recommendations.

During the assessment, we evaluate:

  • Depth perception and spatial judgment

  • Peripheral awareness and visual field usage

  • Eye tracking and pursuit skills

  • Focusing flexibility and near to far transitions

  • Binocular vision skills including convergence and divergence

  • Visual processing efficiency and reaction timing

An eye-health and prescription evaluation is also included. Many athletes with excellent visual acuity still experience performance limitations due to subtle visual-processing or coordination inefficiencies. Our assessment is designed to uncover those hidden factors.

Initial assessments are conducted at our Napanee location, where specialized diagnostic equipment is required for the complete evaluation.

Individualized Sports Vision Training

If training is recommended, we typically suggest a commitment of ten weekly sessions. This timeframe allows for meaningful neurological and motor learning changes that can reliably transfer to on-field performance.

Training sessions are customized based on the athlete’s assessment results and target specific weaknesses while developing higher-level visual-motor integration. Sessions are scheduled weekly, with the same appointment time reserved for consistency and progression.

All training sessions take place at our Kingston location, where we have a larger space and access to our full range of sports vision equipment.

Training Technology and Methods

Our training approach integrates clinically supported tools and sport-specific drills. Depending on the athlete’s needs, sessions may include:

  • Senaptec strobe glasses
Intermittently restrict visual input to challenge the brain to process information more efficiently, improving reaction time and visual anticipation.

  • Digital tracking and peripheral awareness programs
Web-based tools designed to enhance eye movement control, visual attention, and awareness beyond central vision.

  • Depth perception and spatial judgment drills
Activities that refine distance estimation, trajectory judgment, and timing.

  • BlazePod reaction and decision-making training
Go or no-go drills and reaction-time challenges that combine visual discrimination with rapid motor responses.

  • Free-space visual-motor integration tasks
Sport-specific drills that connect visual input with full-body movement and are selected and progressed with baseball demands in mind.

Performance Transfer to Sport

In fast-paced sports, success depends on the ability to rapidly interpret visual information and act decisively. The skills trained in our programs support improvements in:

  • Judging ball speed and trajectory

  • Timing and contact consistency

  • Peripheral awareness of game situations

  • Reaction speed and visual-motor efficiency

  • Pitch recognition and tracking

Our goal is not just better visual test scores, but measurable improvements that carry over into competition. Contact us to gain a competitive visual edge!
